Hydro Electric Projects in Himachal Pradesh

Development of hydro energy started in 1910 in Himachal Pradesh with the commencing of Bhuri Singh Hydroelectric Project in Chamba. Since then a number of hydroelectric projects running in the state.These projects are managed by State and Central Government, Joint sector and Private Sector.

Himachal Pradesh account for 25.9% of the total potential of India. Estimated hydel potential of Himachal Pradesh is about 27,436 MW.

The hydroelectric projects of Himachal Pradesh are as follows:

Hydoelectric Projects in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh

1) Chamera –I :- it is located on river Ravi in Chamera Village of Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh. The Power Station is commissioned in the year 1994. The power has an installed design capacity of 540 Megawatt(3 units x 180 MW).It has 3 units in operation and all the three units are commissioned in 1994 itself. It is operated by NHPC Limited of India.

2) Chamera – II -: it is also located on river Ravi in Chamera Village of Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh. This Hydro Power Plant has a total installed capacity of 300 Megawatt. The power plant has 3 units. The first unit was commissioned in 02 November 2003 with an installed capacity of 100 Megawatt. Similarly the second and third units are commissioned in December 2003 and February 2004 respectively. The power plant is run by National Hydro Power Corporation Limited(NHPC).

3) Chamera -III-: This Hydroelectric Power Plant India is situated at the Dharwala of Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh in India. This Hydro Power Plant is a hydroelectric type with a total installed capacity of 231 Megawatt. The power plant has 3 units. The first unit was commissioned in 2012 with an installed capacity of 77 Megawatt. Similarly all units are commissioned respectively in 2012 itself. The power plant is run by NHPC Limited.

4) Baira-Siul Project :- Baira Siul is an 180MW hydro power project. It is located on Ravi, Baira, Siul and Bhaledh river/basin in Chamba ,Himachal Pradesh, India.The Power Station was commissioned in the years 1980 and 1981.Renovation and Modernization for Life Extension was undertaken after completion of 35 years of commercial operation and has been successfully completed on 31.08.2021.The project is developed and owned by NHPC.

5) Holi Hydel Project:- it is located on Ravi River in bharmour(Chamba) of Himachal Pradesh.This project is installed with capacity of 3.0MW.

6) Kuther Hydel Project :- The Kuther hydel greenfield project is proposed to be developed as a 260 MW run-of-the-river scheme located in the upper reaches of river Ravi. The project is envisaged to harness the head available between villages Kutehr and Kharamukh, both situated along Chamba-Holi road about 70 km and 51 km, respectively, upstream of Chamba.This project is developed and managed by private company named JSW Energy.

Hydoelectric Projects in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh

1) Gaj Hydel Project:- Gaj Power House Himachal Pradesh is erected at the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. It is commissioned in 1996 with an approved and installed capacity of 10.5 MW. The type of the project is Small since it is between the range of 3 MW and 25 MW. The water source of the power plant is GajKhad and the basin is Indus River. The completion of the power project was in 1996 and soon the power project started its commercial operation. The owner of the power plant is Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board undertaking by State Government .

2) Pong Dam:– The Pong Hydroelectric Project is commissioned in January 1978. The approved capacity of the plant is 396 MW.The water source of power plant is Beas River and the basin is Indus River. The power plant is owned and functioned by Bhakra Beas Management Board which is under Central Government.

3) Binwa Hydel Project :– Binwa Hydroelectric Project has an installed capacity of 6 MW comprising 2 units each, is situated near Baijnath in the district of Kangra in Himachal Pradesh. The source of water is Binwa River. The owner of the power plant is Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board undertaking by State Government. The total number of turbines in the plant is two and the capacity per Turbine is 3 MW. So the total installed capacity would be 6 MW.

4) Baner Hydel Project : – Baner Hydroelectric Project has an approved capacity of 12 Megawatt. The installed capacity is also 12 Megawatt. The source of water is from BanerKhad .The power plant is owned and operated by Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board under State Government.

5) Bara Banghal Project :– Bara Banghal hydro power plant on the Ravi river at Bara Bhangal in Dhauladhar Wildlife Sanctuary, Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, India.Project has an installed capacity of 200MW. The power plant is owned and operated by Private company Malana Power Company Ltd (MPCL).

Hydoelectric Projects in the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh

1) Shanan Power Project :- The power plant is located in the Barot Valley of Jogindernagar of Mandi District in the state of Himachal Pradesh. The first unit of Shanan Hydroelectric Power Project is commissioned in 1932 and the last unit is commissioned in 1982. The approved total capacity of the power plant is 110 Megawatt. The source of water is Uhl River and the basin is Indus RiverThe power plant is owned and operated by Punjab State Power Corporation Limited.

2) Bassi Power Project :– Bassi Hydroelectric Project is an extension of Beas Power House located in the Mandi District constituting 4 units of 15MW each.The Bassi Hydroelectric Power station has an approved and installed capacity of 60 Megawatt. The source of water for the generation of power is Beas River. The power plant is owned and operated by the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board.

Hydoelectric Projects in the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh

1) Parbati Hydel Project-: Located at Behali village in Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh, Parbati Hydroelectric Project is a pondage scheme that involves construction of a gravity type concrete dam, procuring bolster to the hydropower potential of river Parbati, Panch Nallah, Manihar Nallah, Huria Nallah and Sainj River.

Parbati Hydropower Scheme is a 2GW hydroelectric project which was planned to be developed in three stages. Parbati-I project was abandoned due to environmental failures. The work on Parbati-II and Parbati-III was started simultaneously.

The Parbati-II hydroelectric project is being developed in Pulga and Suind villages, in the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh.

2) Sainj Hydel Project-: it is a 100MW hydro power project. It is located on Sainj river at kullu district Himachal Pradesh, India. The project got commissioned in 2017.The project is developed and owned by Himachal Pradesh Power.

3) Larji Hydel Project:– Larji Hydroelectric Power Plant is erected at the Beas River of Mandi district in the Himachal Pradesh. This Power Project is commissioned in 27 December 2006. It has a total installed capacity of 126 MW. The power plant is owned and operated by the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board.

4) Allain Duhangan Project :– .Allain Duhangan Hydroelectric Power Plant is located at the Kullu District of Himachal Pradesh.This Power Plant is commissioned in July 2010. The approved and installed capacity of the hydroelectric power plant is 192 Megawatt. The source of water in the hydroelectric power plant is from the rivers, Allain and Duhang..The owner of this Self-financing power plant is AD Hydro Private Limited.

5) Malana Hydel Project :– This Hydroelectric Project is located in the Malana Village of Kullu district in Himachal Pradesh. It has the total installed capacity of 86 MW.Malana Hydroelectric Project is commissioned in July 2001.The source of water in the power plant for the generation of power is Malana River.The owner and operating company of the power plant is Malana Power Company Limited.

Hydoelectric Projects in the Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh

1) Andra Hydroelectric Project :- The power plant is located in the Chirgaontown of Rohru tehsil in Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh.he power plant is commissioned in between the years, 1987 to 1988. The approved and installed capacity of this hydroelectric power plant is 16.95 Megawatt.

The source of water for the generation of power is Andhra KhadRiver. The hydroelectric power plant is owned and operated by Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board.

2) Rampur Hydroelectric Project:- The Rampur hydroelectric power plant is a 412MW hydropower station situated on the Satluj River in the state of Himachal Pradesh.The project was developed by Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam, a joint venture of Government of India and the Government of Himachal Pradesh.

3) Ganvi Hydroelectric Project-: The Power plant is located on Sutlaj River at the Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh. The power project was completed in 2000 and it starts its operation from 2000 onwards.it has an approved and installed capacity of 22.5 MW. The power project is owned and operated by the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board (HPSEB).

Hydoelectric Projects in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh

1) Sanjay Vidyut Pariyojna:- The Sanjay Vidyut Pariyojna Hydroelectric Project is located in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh. It is erected on the river Bhaba, which is an entire underground project with a total installed capacity of 120 Megawatt, containing 3 units each of 40 Megawatt. The hydroelectric power plant is owned and operated by the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board.

2) Baspa Hydel Project:- The construction of the power project was completed in 2003. Soon after the construction of Power plant, it started its commercial operation in 2003 itself.Baspa Hydroelectric Station is located on Baspa River in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh. Baspa Hydroelectric project has an installed and approved capacity of 300 Megawatt.The Owner and Operator of the power plant is JSW Energy.Baspa Hydro-electric project stage II (300 MW) is the first plant of this size in the private sector and is an environment friendly devoid of any rehabilitation or resettlement issue.

3) Natpa Jhakri Project-: The Nathpa Jhakri Dam is a concrete gravity dam on the Satluj river in Kinnaur and Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh. The primary purpose of the dam is hydroelectric power production and it supplies a 1,500 megawatts (2,000,000 hp) underground power station with water.

Construction on the project began in 1993 and it was complete in 2004. It is owned by SJVN.

4) Karcham –Wangtu Project-: Karcham Wangtoo is a 1,000MW hydro power project. It is located on Satluj river in Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh. The project construction commenced in 2005 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in 2011.The project was developed by Jaiprakash Power Ventures and is currently owned by JSW Hydro Energy with a stake of 100%.

5) Khab Power Project :– it is on satluj river in kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh.it is a 1020MW hydro power project.

1) Giri Bata Hydel Project:- Giri Bata is a 201MW hydro power project. It is located on Yamuna river in Sirmour, Himachal Pradesh.

The project got commissioned in 1978. The project is currently owned by Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board.

2) Renuka Hydel Project:- it is a 40 MW hydro power project located on Yamuna River in Sirmour District of Himachal Pradesh. The project is currently owned by Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board.

3) Yamuna Hydel Project:- it is a 131.5 MW hydro power project located on Yamuna River in Sirmour District of Himachal Pradesh.

Hydoelectric Project in the Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh

1) Dhaula-Sidh Project:- The Dhaulasidh Hydro Electric Project is on beas river in the Himachal Pradesh districts of Hamirpur.It took almost 23 years for the construction for the project to start. Once completed, it would be the first power house in the district.it is owned by Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (SJVNL).

1) Kol Dam-: The 800MW Koldam hydroelectric power project (is under construction on the Satluj River in the Bilaspur District of Himachal Pradesh. India’s state-run National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) is the owner and developer of this hydel project.

Hydoelectric Projects in the Lahaul&Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh

1) Rong-Tong Hydel Project-: it is located on Rong Tong Nullah of Lahaul&Spiti District of  Himachal Pradesh.it is 2MW capacity hyrdo project.It run and owned by Himachal Pradesh State Government.

2) Thirot Hydel Project:- The Thirot Hydro Power Project is located on Thirot River in the Thirot village of Lahaul and Spiti district in Himachal Pradesh. Thirot Hydroelectric power project is commissioned in 1995. The installed and approved capacity of power plant is 4.5 Megawatt The power plant is owned and operated by Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board undertaken by State Government.

3) Chhatru Hydel Project-: This Hydro Power Project is located on Chenab River in Lahaul and Spiti district in Himachal Pradesh. The installed and approved capacity of power plant is 108 Megawatt. The power plant is owned and operated by Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board undertaken by State Government.
