Lakes in Himachal Pradesh District Wise

The hills and valleys of Himachal Pradesh are studded with beautiful lakes. Many rivers of Himachal Pradesh are fed by lakes. These lakes are further fed by glaciers, rainwater and groundwater. Most of lakes are sacred and therefore play an important role in the social and religious life of the people of the state. Some lakes are natural that may date back million of years when the region was a vast island in sea. Lakes of the Himachal Pradesh are mentioned below by district wise.

Lakes in Chamba District

  • Ghadasaru Lake – This lake lies in the chamba district which is 3505 m above the sea level. A kali temple is located near its bank.

  • Manimahesh Lake – it is situated in the Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas in Bharmour sub –division of Chamba district. It is 35 km from Bharmour. This lake situated at the foot of Mount Kailash. The water of Manimahesh lake is believed to be holy, There is also a four faced Shiva Lingam installed near the lake. It is said to be blessed by kali and protected by shiva. Every year following Janmashtami the Annual Manimahesh Yatra is undertaken to this place.

  • Chamera Lake – it is formed due to hydro project (Chamera hydel project) on Ravi river in Chamera Village of Chamba. It is an artificial lake surrounded by green trees and extremely beautiful valleys. The Bhalie temple and the famous thick forest of Bhandal Valley.

  • Khajjiar Lake – This lake lies in chamba district and fed by small streams. The lake got its name from Khajji Nag, the deity in the nearby temple. It is situated at an altitude of 1951m above the mean sea level and it is 1.5 km long, 1Km wide lake. This lake is 24 km from Dalhousie. It is also known as ‘Mini Switzerland’ by swiss envoy Willy P.Blazer on July 7th, 1992. Sign board here indicated its distance from swiss capital Berne. It is 160th to be christened as ‘Mini Switzerland’.
Khajjiar Lake
  • Lama Lake – This lake is located in Chamba and is devoted to Lord Shiva. It is group of 7 lakes. It is 20km away from Dainkund (Dayankund) with a height of 3962 m. Local gaddi tribe visit this lake on Janamashtami.
  • Chanderkup Tal – This lake lies in Chamba District with a height of 3450 m above the sea level. This lake is cover with snow most of the time. During summer season ice blocks keep floating in it.
  • Mahakali Lake – This lake situated at 3657 m above the sea level. This lake lies in churah of chamba district. This lake s devoted to Kali.

Lakes in Kangra District

  • Kareri Lake – This lake lies in Dharamshala of the Kangra District which is 1810 m above the sea level. Kareri lake water falls into the Layun river.

  • Dal Lake – This lake lies in dharamshala of the kangra district which is 1775 m above the sea level. It is also known as Bhagsunag lake. It is surrounded by deodar tress. It is also a pilgrimage centre due to having a famous Lord Shiva Temple lying on the bank of this lake. Radha Astmi fair is celebrated here on every year which is lies after 15 days of Janmashtami.
Dal Lake
  • Maharana Pratap Sagar Lake – This lake lies in kangra district. It is also known as Pong Dam Reservoir or Pong Dam lake. It is named in the honour of great patriot Maharana Pratap Singh (1572-1597 AD) . It is formed on the Beas river due to Maharana Pratap Sagar Dam. It is an artificial lake. It was created in 1975. It is highest earth fill dam in India on the Beas river. This lake is a Ramsar Wetland Site. It is declared as sanctuary in 1983. After Bharatpur (Rajsthan) only place in India where rare red necked grebe has been found.

Lakes in Mandi District

  • Rewalsar Lake – it is also known as “Group of Island”. It is situated at a height of 1360m above sea level in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh. Guru Govind Singh visited here in 1685A.D. There is a sikh “Gurudwara” built in commemoration of Guru Govind singh’s visit. This lake is also known as Padmacan to the Buddhists.

  • Prashar Lake – This lake is also known as floating island lake. This lake is situated at a height of 2743m above sea level in mandi district. It is 30 km from mandi. Saint Prashar have meditated at the bank of this lake and a three-storeyed pagoda like temple dedicated to the saint is located close to lake. Prashar fair is held here in the month of june of every year.
  • Pandoh Lake – This is an artificial lake on Mandi-Kullu road(NH-21) and it is 25km from mandi. This lake is built on Beas river via tunnels to link it with Sutlej river. It is 14 km in length and smallest artificial lake of Himachal Pradesh.

  • Kumarwah/ Kamrunag Lake – This lake is situated at 3150 m above the sea level in the Chachiot district mandi. All the gold and silver offerings presented at a nearby shrine are thron in this lake.

  • Macchial Lake – This lake is situated at the elevation of 850m in the mandi district. This lake is considered sacred and is named after Macchendru Devta or Matasya Avtar of Lord Vishnu.

Some other lake in the mandi District are -: Kunt Bhayog, Kalsar and Sukhsar.

Lakes in Kullu District

  • Bhrigu lake – This lake is situated at 4235 m above sea level, near Rohtang pass in kullu district. Sage used to meditate near the leak and hence it has been rendered sacred, the locals believe that due to this the lake never freezes completely. This lake is held sacred to the sage, Rishu Brighu, a great saint of Indian history.

  • Mantalai Lake – This lake is situated at 4116m above sea level in the district kullu. Mantalai lake is a beautiful water body surrounded by Frozen glaciers in the foothills of Himalayas. It is source of Parbati river in kullu.

  • Dashair Lake – it is located near the Rohtang Pass that connects Kullu district with Lahaul in the state of Himachal Pradesh. It is about 4270m above the sea level and it is also known as Sarkund. It is said that bath in the water of this lake effects cure of all bodily aliments.

Some other Lake in kullu district are – Sareulsar, Shringtingu.

Lakes in Shimla District

  • Tanu Jubbal/ Tani Jubbar Lake – This lake situated within the apple country of shimla district between Narkanda and Thanedar. It is small and secluded water body.

  • Bardonsar Lake – This lake situated at 5500 m above the sea level in the district shimla of Himachal Pradesh. It is located between Dodra-Kawar(shimla) and Sangla (Kinnaur).
  • Chadranahan Lake – it is high altitude lake which is located in Rohru tehsil of shimla district in Himachal Pradesh at elevation of about 4,260 m above sea level. It is surrounded by snow for a long time and is the source of river Pabbar.

  • Karali Lake – This lake is the one of famous lake in shimla district of Himachal Pradesh. It is located on the Chhota Shali hillock just another side of Shali peak. The water of lake is not very clean. It is dirty water lake. The size of this lake is almost equal to Annadale ground of shimla.

Lakes in Kinnaur District

  • Nako Lake – Nako lake is situated at elevation of 3662 m in the Pooh of district Kinnaur. The lake is surrounded by willow and poplur tress. It forms part of the boundary of Nako village, and name after it. It freezes in winter and people enjoy skating on the lake. Near Nako, there is a footprint like impression ascribed to the saint Padmasambhava.

  •  Sorang Lake – Sorang Lake is above the village of Jani and Rammi in Nichar Tehsil of Kinnaur.

Lakes in Lahaul-Spiti District

  • Chandra Tal – This lake is also known as Lake of Moon. It is source of Chandra River. This lake is situated at the height of 4270m and it is 6km away from the Kunzum Pass in Lahaul and spiti district. Chinese traveler Hiuen Tsang called it Lohitya Sarovar.

  • Suraj Tal Lake – This lake is also known as Lake of Sun. it is source of Bhaga river located opposite to Baralacha pass in Lahaul spiti. It is the 3rd largest lake in india.

  • Tso Morari Lake: Tso Morari is one of the largest lakes in the Ladakh region. The altitude from the sea level is 4900M. This lake is almost like an inland sea.

Lakes in Sirmour District

  • Renuka Lake – Renuka lake is lies in district Sirmour with the height of 672m above the sea level. it is the largest natural lake in Himachal Pradesh with circumference of about 3214m. This lake was named after the Goddess Renuka. Renuka temple is situated on the bank of this lake. The shape of lake is like a sleeping woman. Every year Renuka Fair is held in November here.

  • Suketi Lake – it is located near Suketi Fossil Park which is near Markanday river in Sirmour District. Now this lake is filled with sand.

Lake in Bilaspur

  • Gobind Sagar Lake – it is situated on world’s highest gravity dam i.e. Bhakra Nangal Dam located in the Bilaspur district. Bhakra dam was constructed in 1963, Pandit Nehru called this dam “New Temple of Resurgent India”. This lake is largest artificial lake in Himachal Pradesh. This lake is home to variety of migratory birds. The department of Tourism and Civil Aviation organize water sport activities every year in the months of October and November here.
